Removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere is vital if humanity is to stop climate change. The most promising technology developed to perform this task is direct air capture. Direct air capture can be categorized into two types, chemical capture, and physical capture. Currently, physical air capture is the most widely adopted by companies and organizations.
Technology
Standard direct air capture works by using fans to force air through and filter which absorbs all the carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is then extracted and stored underground or in other forms of storage. The filters used in direct air capture is quite complex. A liquid, usually sodium hydroxide serves as a filter and chemically bonds with the carbon dioxide in the air. This solution is then pumped away and undergoes more chemical reactions to separate the liquid from the carbon dioxide so it can then be reused. After the carbon dioxide is separated from the liquid it can be stored in various ways, from pressurized tanks, turning it into a liquid, burying it underground, or bonding it into rocks.
Environmental Impact
Direct air capture help remove greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere, which is very effective in the fight to cool down the planet because direct air capture is carbon negative not carbon neutral. Meaning that direct air capture removes preexisting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and doesn’t produce any in the process. However, in order for direct air capture to be effective, the energy used to run these facilities must be from renewable energy sources or direct air capture will only be carbon neutral not carbon negative.
Economy
Direct air capture companies make money in many ways, from selling captured carbon dioxide to factories that use carbon dioxide in manufacturing operations. Other ways are accepting charters from countries or completing charters from companies with net carbon level agreements.
Summary
Overall, direct air capture is a very promising new technology that will aid mankind in the fight against climate change. Being both good for the environment and profitable allows direct air capture to be self sufficient and not rely on temporary funds such as donations. This technology will only grow and mature as time passes becoming increasingly common and efficient.
