The Ideologies of Climate Change

Climate change is already an incredibly controversial topic that separates people, yet the ideologies brought to the table in order to solve climate change only furthers our partisanship and lack of collaboration. Currently the government quibbles over each and every minute detail in order to pass pieces of legislation that fully follows each of their own agendas, the net outcome is that no progress is made whether you support climate change or not.

The Government

The American government is primarily composed of two parties, Republican and Democratic, each with their own set of agendas that are some forms of socialism and capitalism, both of these ideologies have their benefits and disadvantages. The problem is, that when facings such a monumental task as climate change one country is not enough, nor is a few, since the amount of money required to do such things will far exceed the fractions of the budget alloted by government so tackle this problem. Also, solving climate change through the government will result in largely socialist legislation such as carbon taxes, maximum carbon emissions per person, etc; this just makes it more inefficient since these pieces of legislation would never get fully passed due to the other party rejecting it. Currently with the amount of investment given by government is not doing nearly enough to even have a slight noticeable impact, and is merely a political buzzword to garner support. Although some progress can in fact be seen through the emissions and temperature data gathered within the last few years, it is not enough to fully solve this problem and we simply have just made the easiest possible changes so any further improvement will become harder and harder. The one governing body that has the capability to make an impact on climate change is the UN, yet with the current indecisiveness and lack of cooperation within the UN along with the multitude of other pressing issues regarding humanitarian crisis and more that the UN is prioritizing means that the UN most likely will not be able to make any meaningful legislation that will result in substantial progress toward climate change.

The Socialist and Capitalist View

As of now climate change is an incredibly polar subject, there are those who wholey support both the facts and the misinformation regarding climate change and advocate for everyone to do their share in this endeavour, most of the time these result in socialist methodologies and solutions toward climate change; such as each person changing their lifestyles in various ways like reducing waste, changing their diet, traveling less and more. These things however only are effective and will be noticable when the majority of the world population makes such changes, and many people do not support these changes and an even greater number of people don’t have the capability to make these changes as they rely on more carbon heavy lifestyles not because they choose to but because they are less costly. The flipside to this is the capitalists view, although many people who do not support the socialist view to solving climate change also do not believe in climate change at all, there are some people who have taken a capitalistic stance toward solving climate change, by creating companies and corporations that profit off of solving climate change. However many of these companies are still in their infancy and will not make any significant progress until they become vast multi-million or even billion dollar corporations.

My Opinion

Neither of these methods are inherently flawed in the theoretical sense, however when applied to western society at least I think there is a clear winner, which is the capitalistic idea to solve climate change. However in order to fully see this idea into its success a few changes must be made. Firstly

Author’s Note

Both the words socialist and capitalist have incredibly negative connotations, and the use of these words within this blog do not represent these connotations but merely the ideas themselves.
